The Preston on Stour Environmental Group are delighted to be presenting an
important talk by Mark Cocker on 16 November 2019.
It will be based on his book Our Place, about the fate of British nature in the
twentieth century. Published in 2018 it went on to be shortlisted for the Wainwright
Prize.
Mark Cocker is widely acclaimed as one of Britain's finest writers on nature. He is
a lifelong naturalist and environmental tutor, who writes and broadcasts on nature
and wildlife in a variety of national media including 30 years as a Guardian country
diarist.
His 11 other books include works of biography, history, literary criticism and
memoir. They include Claxton: Field Notes from a Small Planet (2014) and Birds
and People (2013). The latter was published to international acclaim and was a
collaboration with the photographer David Tipling. Between them these two were
shortlisted for six literary awards including the Thwaites/Wainwright Prize. His
book Crow Country was shortlisted for several awards, including the Samuel
Johnson Prize, and won the New Angle Prize (2009). In 2016 he was awarded an
Honorary Doctorate of Literature from the University of East Anglia, where he has
recently placed his archive.
Our Place was described in the Sunday Times as 'impassioned, expert and
beautifully written' and in the New Statesman as 'a call for revolution'. In his talk
for the Preston Environmental Group he will develop the books central and most
urgent messages about how and why the British can do more for nature. The
evening promises to be thoughtful and provocative and to inspire vigorous
discussion.
